    SCOM 2007 Dynamic Group population

     Hi all,

Can anyone help me with this scenario.  In a nutshell I want to be able to populate a custom group using the description field in AD.  I can see how to do this with the query builder rules for the server names, but unfortunately our server names do not contain the right information.

This has arrised because I need to group all our Live servers, pre-prod, test and dev servers in their own groups so I can get a high level overview using a 3rd party product (Savision's Live Maps - good product!) for our management to see.  Our servers aren't grouped in this way in AD for other technical reasons which can't be changed, but the description field is filled in with this info, hence the question.

All help would be appreciated and thanks for your time in reading this.

Since the description field is not collected and attached to the Windows Coputer object as an attribute - you will need to do some custom work to acheive this.  Here are two options:

    1.  Write a custom script which performs an LDAP query and then populates the computers matching your LDAP query to a group - using the SDK.

    2.  Use a registry attribute on prod, pre-prod, test, and dev servers in your company - and then extend the Windows Computer class to include this attribute, and use your new attribute for grouping.  This requires you push a reg key down to all servers in the company, but this could prove useful as a standard for grouping down the road.
