    Monitoring SQL 2K5 on a W2K8 Agent

this is in reference to an AGENT that's running sql, not the SCOM sql database.

i had a sql 2005 server running on Windows 2003. all databases, etc. show up fine in SCOM 2007 SP1.

i moved all databases to a sql 2005 server running on windows server 2008. the server itself shows up in SCOM but no SQL properties show up, as though SCOM does not realize SQL is running on it. do i have a configuration issue or is server 2008 monitoring support still lacking?

2008 is supported as long as a few hotfixes have been installed.  see kevins post http://blogs.technet.com/kevinholman/archive/2008/07/28/announcing-opsmgr-support-for-windows-server-2008.aspx

has the SCOM agent been deployed to the WINDOWS 2008 machine? Has the Windows 2008 Base OS MP been loaded on the rms and the patches been applied to the RMS?

scom agent is on the box. the latest OS management pack is on the RMS but i did not know about the hotfixes.

even without the hotfixes, the server's health explorer shows Windows Server 2008 Enterprise in various sections. but there are no indications that it has sql installed.

so we're clear, only this particular AGENT is 2008. the RMS and all other SCOM Server pieces are still on windows 2003.

also the symptoms listed on the hotfix page don't seem to apply. i havent' upgraded an agent from 2003 to 2008.

i have applied all the required windows 2008 hotfixes to the 2008 agent. i have applied the hotfix rollup to my SCOM server and the SCOM agent on the 2008 agent. still no go. SCOM sees the server, and that it's running windows 2008, but has no indication that SQL is on the server.

I'll assume that the SQL MP has been loaded on the rms too. Does the account you ran the install with does did it have admin rights on the box? Is the agent running as system? does system have access to SQL?

gah. imagine my surprise when i found out they are in fact running SQL 2008, not 2005. the newest sql management pack supports sql 2008 and once it was installed everything seems to be working just fine.
